Top 17 Tools for Content Search

For the amateur social listener and futurist like me, knowing what is trending is important. I prefer a Twitter-centric view of this.

Whether you are looking for keywords, content search or trends, you’ll want to check the same topics on multiple places. The key to content curation is that it can:

  • Ups social authority
  • Ups knowledge authority
  • Ups targeting of audience
  • Ups lead generation
  • Is interactive (think Twitter Polls, online surveys like surveymonkey or UGC)

Original content means less than it once did, we are in an age of content automation, where algorithms distribute it on many channels. Very often, frequency of sharing has more relevancy than quality of sharing. High frequency channels are those that have dense streams or no feeds (Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest). On channels where streams with organic search that has been grealty reduced (with algorithms for mobile monitization) to next to nil (Facebook is about 4% now), high frequency adoption makes sense in 2016 (Facebook, LinkedIn). Given this new reality, marketing software that recycles content while it automates, like Edgar, are on the way up.

Here are some top tools that may help:

1. A visual Map with key topics: here.

5. Quora Search: here.

6. Twitter Advanced Search: here.

7. Reddit Search: here.

14. RiteTag: here. (get the chrome ext if you like it)

15. Crowdfire Keyword Search: here. (good for finding influencers)

16. LinkedIn Pulse Search: (posts) here.

Top 35 Twitter Hacks

1- Create Methodical Follow Lists for all categories in your field that are relevant.

2- Study your competitors on Twitter, and study their audience and their content strategy.

3- Add 3 or 4 #hashtags in your Twitter bio .

4- Use Twitter tools that combine Geo-targeting like FollowRocket if that’s relevant to your business.

5- Check how you are perceived, go to Lists, and click on “Member of”. See where people are adding you and if it is in line with the niche you are trying to hack.

6- Use Twitter’s Keyboard Shortcuts:

7. In addition to using Twitter analytics and Campaign reports tools, don’t forget the inbuilt Twitter analytics. Click on your avatar on the top right and go down to Analytics. Take Monthly screen shots and store them somewhere in a folder:

8. Upload on occasion, Video or a Slideshare. Good to have mixed media content from time to time. Curate infographics for an engagement boost.

9. Create and feature a binary 24 hour Poll that’s relevant to your industry and may create helpful analytics, save the results somewhere to embed in a blog article or for your own information.

10. Pin to profile posts that you feel are representative articles of your work or are landing pages you want to generate some inbound lead gen to. To do this, click on the … (dot, dot, dot) more tab and “pin to your profile page”.

11. Manage multiple account easily via Tweetdeck. You may have a personal, a work and a brand twitter, or some other combination.

12. Find content influencers who appeal to you and retweet (curate) their the best posts of their feed on a regular basis. Show you care about them and they may start supporting you as well in the law of reciprocity.

13. Embed and create alternative captions to retweet a post, recycle it on a weekly or at different hours of the day. Mirror a tweet and reflect it on G+, Facebook or somewhere else as well where it makes sense to your brand.

14. Schedule Tweets with Buffer or Hootsuite or if you can’t be bothered, try out the native ads.twitter.com, you can easily do it from there as well, simply go to: click on compose tweet and then on the scheduling tab.

15. Search for conversations between 2 users and trending conversations with this tool Contweets. This enables you to find relevant information quickly to your niche industry.

16. If you are into SMS/text notification (I prefer it to Email) , go to Settings, Mobile and put in your phone number and set it to text you when one of your posts is RTed. I find this very useful.

17. You don’t remember what tools and apps you have used in Conjunction with Twitter in the past? No worries, just go to settings and apps, and check them out. You may want to ‘revoke access’ to some that you no longer bother with.

18. Get a lot more characters in a message with this easy trick! Write your message in a memo app on your phone and take a screenshot of it, then post it as a Tweet in image form. Celebrities use this hack often enough, why shouldn’t we? I call this an Insta-Tweet. To commemorate the fact that visual marketing on Instagram has overtaken Tweets in 2016.

19. Use #hashtags strategically, not on every post, but on the ones you want to double engagement rates.

20.Have a variety of posts, curate content, share your quality content, have discussions, participate in chats and have a diversity of Tweets.

21. Twitter is a high-frequency channel, if you are only posting a few times per week, it’s unlikely you will build a following or get to know others in your network. Commit to at least 5 posts a day for optimal conversion rates of followers and to use Twitter as a real lead generation channel. Schedule them or do them personally, think about what time of the day people are actually listening to Twitter (best in the late pm hours).

22. Engage with what’s popular, this includes trending topics, influencers and talking about current events, news, politics. Show your human side, you aren’t just a digital marketer or tech person, you are also a human being with a colorful personality, don’t be afraid to show it.

23. Study and re-study the best times to tweet and optimal interval between tweets for your niche, industry or audience. General studies indicate Monday to Thursday is peak. For clicks, tweet early morning. For favorites and re-tweets, tweet late at night. The rule of thumb is engagement is highest in an inverse relation to the most popular times to tweet. Scheduling a tweet for between 2 and 3 am is therefore not crazy at all since that would be one of the best times for engagement, defined as clicks plus re-tweets, favorites, and replies.

24.  Be aware that around 38% of Twitter users check their profiles daily, so try to stand out with quality content. If your audience associates you with quality and targeted content that’s relevant and salient to them, they WILL follow and maybe engage you.

25. Twitter in terms of demographics does well with ethnic groups, Hispanics, African-american, French Canadians and so forth, so be bold enough sometimes to target them in a Tweet. Millennials grew up in unparalleled diversity, so reflect that, reflect the real world in your tweets. Twitter breaks boundaries and new ground and connects the world in real-time.

26. Position yourself as a go-to influencer that reports News in your industry first. See a new blog about your field, a change in algorithm or new features of an app, introduce it and your audience will come to associate you with cutting-edge News. Remember, many people now get their News from Twitter and social listening.

27. Don’t expect the same kind of engagement from a Brand or company Twitter, also use your personal account twitter. People respond intuitively better to individuals, people with real stories. So when you do Twitter, think about that, and curate different content from both of your twitter accounts. Your entire company should be on Twitter, contributing content marketing and doing soft social selling and spreading your outreach to different audiences.

28. Twitter is a great tool, hopefully it’s part of your integrated social media strategy. Social media implies however, not just traditional channels, but actual websites where social interaction is taking place. This means going on Reddit, Quora, commenting on Blog posts, getting off the beaten track and occasionally tweeting about a Pin on Pinterest and content that’s quality but a bit less common in a social feed. There are millions of people on those sites who provide quality content whether it be industry insight on Quora, visual story-telling on Pinterest or Instagram and AMAs on Reddit.

29. Research and starting experimenting with Twitter tools, there are tons of that are free and a lot of them help you search Twitter, and provide you with smarter social analytics in general. Here are some good tools. Be weary of automation tools that might unfollow influencers (who don’t follow you in return) as these can mess up your network if you aren’t careful. If you are lazy or too busy to give Twitter a few hours each week, an automation service may be a good option for you.

30. Repost and recycle content periodically, this is one of the golden rules of Content curation and sharing. Twitter is such an information dense and high-speed channel, nobody will notice or care. That’s how you can reach more of an audience and create sustained lead generation. So think about your most popular pieces of content, your best inbound lead generation devices. Maybe it’s a Slideshare, maybe it’s a video, probably it’s an infographic, right?

31. User Generated Content isn’t just an Instagram & YouTube phenomena, curate the best articles you find on Medium and LinkedIn pulse as well, this will give your twitter feed an authentic grass roots feel, and show you are inspired by empowering the content of others. This gives your brand a more human feel. If you share quality content targetted to your audience, so much the better!

32. Channels like Twitter, really do have their own slang, sometimes it does require an explanation, here are some of my favorites:

ab/ = about

attwicted = addicted to Twitter

b4 = before

beetweet = a trending or “hot tweet”, many users will TR one.

bemyguest = #BeMyGuest, a hashtag relevant to the implied exchange of guest blog posts.

BFN = bye for now

Bird-of-mouth = Twitter slang referring to the use of Twitter to circulate news and info.

Cre8 = “create”

da = “the”

detweet = a tweet that was subsequently deleted, popular among emotional athletes and celebrities.

DM = direct message, a private message to a person you are following.

DoubleDM = the customization of the message a new follower will get that can be customized to the time of the day, etc. This is an important lead gen technique for serial Twitter users and digital geeks.

EMA = “email address” used on your Twitter

F2F = face to face, real life meeting.

FF = FollowFriday, It is a CTA used to a user’s favorite followers and favorite people on Twitter. It’s a personal recommendation of those people to your other followers. Use the hashtag #followfriday when you do this.

FOMO: “fear of missing out”

HAND = “have a nice day”

# = A hash tag or hashtag is a way of organizing your updates for Twitter search engines. Users prefix a message with a community-driven hash tag to enable others to discover relevant posts. Searching by hashtag is essential for high quality social listening in your industry niche and topics.

Hivemind = referring to collective-intelligence, global human ability and specifically the combined intelligence of all Twitter users.

ICYMI = “in case you missed it”

Intwituation = referring to being infatuated with another Twitter user.

Mention = Used to name another user within your tweet by using the @ symbol with the other user’s username.

MRT = “modified retweet”, often an added caption or adding #hashtags to a tweet when you RT it.

Neweeter = slang for a new twitter user.

NTS = note to self

PRT = “please retweet”, often at the end of a tweet, a polite way to ask others to RT it.

Retweet = Abbrivated as RT, retweet is used on Twitter to show you are tweeting something that was posted by another user. The format is RT @username where username is the Twitter name of the person you are retweeting.

SMH = “shaking my head”, when a user does not agree with something or is off-put by it.

SNS = social networking site. Any site that is a social channel or community based website, online forum, chat rooms or other.

TBT = “throw back Thursday, one of the most popular #hashtags of all-time, refering to an old image or reference to the past. Going back down memory lane.

TFTF = “thanks for the follow”.

Twabe = a term of endearment or flattering for a young woman, .e.g meaning roughly the same as “dear” or “sweetheart”.

Twaffic = traffic on twitter

Tweet = A tweet is basically whatever you type into the Web box to answer that question, using 140 characters or less. People tweet personal messages, random thoughts, post links, or anything else that fits in the character requirements.

TwinkedIn = slang for inbound lead gen to LinkedIn from twitter, somebody who invites their followers to interact with them on LinkedIn, more common these days.

woz = slang for “was”

ykyat =  “you know you’re addicted to”…when…

YOLO = You only live once.

33. When you are doing a Campaign, create a sense of urgency about a promotion or loyalty program, build anticipation, have a time limited offer, and do discounts for brand advocates who share user-generated content about your products online. Think about Gamification strategies for you use of Twitter and CTAs and targeted campaigns, don’t just tweet.

34. Analyze your past use of Twitter, don’t just repeat the same boring routine. Try new kinds of posts, new ways of fostering actual human interaction with your followers, interact with them more. Don’t just talk about yourself and what you do, but show interest in others, think about being more social on Twitter as a person! Taking risks and trying new things and looking at the analytics.

35. Target followers that have a direct bearing on your industry, niche and who could be potential clients and customers. If your Twitter is for business purposes, this has to be your focus. Think about the kind of content that would be interesting for them. Figure that they already know you and what you do, so give them content “snacks” that augment their Twitter experience, don’t over-sell your brand but curate more great content.

What’s the Blurb on Blab

Blab

Not just a broadcast medium, this is a collaboration app with just the right mix of social and pragmatic potential to be actually useful.

I don’t know about you, but I never got the Meerkat craze, I didn’t get the Periscope craze either, but Blab.im has my attention. Why so, you may be asking. Well, I like the split screen concept, I like the collaborative possibilities of this Periscope meets Google Hangouts type stream. In the internet of streams of the future, technology is social and so I always have my eyes on the next truly social channels.

So many social media channels are arenas of spam and quite frankly, 30% and rising amounts of non-sense. Check your LinkedIn inbox recently? How about SMS? Yep, channels get polluted far too quickly by offers, fake accounts and the like. But I digress, what’s the word on Blab you want to know. Well, for something still in Beta, it has my interest perked. You sign-in or up easily enough via Twitter.

Blab is a live-streaming platform that facilitates public video chat, coming with a desktop and mobile interface. Truthfully, that alone is enough to get me excited. Having conversations that matter on topics you are interested in, with a potential audience.

If one of the seats is open, a member of the audience can ask to join.
Blab is an April, 2015 baby, so still very young in terms of emerging channels. I personally like to hop on a bandwagon that’s still in Beta, like I did for Kwirk and like I will for Peeple, for instance. This way you can be involved from the start and watch the channel soar or fade. I’m not an avid skyper but with 3 other participants, the pressure is off. Do you see the appeal? So why could it matter?

I’d like to think it could make for some engaging conversations. Let’s face it, the art of being inspired by a good conversation is not dead, it’s just different in the digital world. And get this, you are sent a link with the recording! That’s pretty neat.

Let’s think about:

* Brainstorming sessions
* Customer Hot Seat Panels
* Advice or collabortive problem solving
* Answering tough customer questions (yay for transparncy!)
* Interactive multi-person interviews (think radioshow format)
* Taking questions from viewers in the comment section
* Talk show, daily talk show style
* Webinar demos with a twist, multi-perspective
* Conversations that you can later embed in blog posts
* Create social video content for Email posts
* Upload memorable content directly to corporate YouTube channel
* Chronicle phases and major events in your startup
* Edit snippets of micro video to share on company Instagram
* Organize key points into a Pinterest tall pin
* Mesh content around for wordpress blog or Tumblr
* Are you starting to see what I’m talking about yet? I’ve seen videos before with 4 talking faces, and I’ve thought, hey what’s that software they used! But hang on, that’s just people blab.im – ing about something.

I may not have the gift of the gab like some of you out there, but I’m certainly not one to shy away from new channels.

This could be a B2B Tool, as seen by the categories, you will notice technology and business are already there. So this isn’t quite as frivolous and hedonistic as one-to-one live streaming, that has a certain exhibitionist flavor and fervor that quite frankly I think makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

Apparently you can schedule a blab up to a month in advance, so create hype about a product launch or any event you like. The 4-free-for-all format is seamless and can involve text from the audience, which means it’s obviously more interpersonal. This means is if you have interpersonal chops, it’s video that’s more down to earth. It’s new media for the authenticity interactive kind of social media emphasis that we are starting to see.

Authenticity pod-casting of your company to introduce yourselves to the world and your brand advocates.
Could it be used for customer support and optimal customer feedback mechanism?
Will they enable private blabs for enterprise and startup uses?
It’s an intriguing possibility, especially for Millennials and social media lovers who enjoy teamwork in the context of real-time brainstorming. What I like most about blab, is it gives you content that you can re-purpose in a number of ways, that displays the true social culture of your company and its talent.

Can you see yourself trying blab.im out?

Top 10 Social Media Branding Trends of 2015

Sep 26, 2015

Branding in 2015 took on a new definition. With the emphasis of the human experience, connecting and relating to your audience is more important than ever. Brands that don’t adapt to the new trends, won’t create the positive emotional experience of attachment you will require to retain customers and make loyal new ones.

Keywords here are:

Humor, entertain, educate, advocate, help and interact. Every content “snack” you post, should have a vivid interaction of these. People like brands more, who know how to make them feel good. In the attention economy, the window you can win their attention even for a few seconds, is truly minimal so focus on headlines, opening paragraph and visual content to get some swag.

With content marketing becoming so important, implicating your customers and audience to create content (UGC) with tools like Pixlee, to make user generated content campaigns is more important than ever.

Let’s take a look at some of today’s recommendations on a short slideshare, share this article if you think it might be useful to your network:
